Problem

Quarry's console was a wall of tabs. Getting from a fresh account to a first query took eleven minutes on average, most of it spent looking for the query editor.

Approach

The editor became the front door, dark by default because that is how these users run their terminals. Jobs, metrics, schema and access moved into a sidebar that reads like a file tree, and a command palette reaches everything from anywhere. The empty states teach the product instead of apologizing for it.

Outcome

Time to first query dropped from eleven minutes to three, and trial-to-paid conversion rose with it.
