Problem

Lumen's hardware was excellent and its app was a settings menu. Owners used the wall switch instead, which meant the expensive bulbs ran at one color forever.

Approach

The app is dark because you use it in the dark. Rooms first, one slider per room, scenes as big cards with the color they make, and a single dial for warmth. Automations are built as two connected cards, a trigger and an action, because that is how people say them out loud. A floor plan on the web does the setup once.

Outcome

Support tickets fell 35% in the quarter after release, and scene use tripled.
